I'm off and running with my Dry July fundraising challenge. I'm going to keep a record of the challenge here and each day publish a reason why doing Dry July is a good idea.
Today I have been amazed and humbled by the level of support I'm getting already. A big thank you to those that have already donated. I will be increasing my target now.

Reason 1. It’s a great cause.
I’m no clinician but I do know data. At one time in my life, I was responsible for the National Cancer Registry which is the official record kept by the Ministry of Health to record incidence of cancer in Aotearoa.
We know that cancer is second only to cardiovascular disease as a leading cause of death.
There were around 27,000 people who got cancer in this country in 2020 (the latest year we have data for) and around 10,000 died of cancer that same year.
But the numbers don’t tell the full story. Surviving cancer takes a lot of support and is not something that happens quickly. People who have great support are far less likely to perish all other things being equal.
That’s why the cancer support services that are funded by Dry July are so important. Organisations such as Look Good Feel Better, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Pinc & Steel provide support to help cancer patients keep mentally strong, which seems to be pretty important in fighting the disease.
As one of my supporters said today - there is no better cause.
